SPEECH OF PRESIDENT VASDEV HASSAMAL ON HIS INDUCTION AS PRESIDENT OF THE ROTARAY CLUB OF CUREPIPE

Dear Guests and Fellow Members GOOD EVENING

FIRST OF ALL, LET ME THANK ALL MEMBERS OFTHE ROTARY CLUB OF CUREPIPE FOR PUTTING THEIR TRUST INTO ME AS THEIR PRESIDENT FOR THE YEAR 2017-2018. I AM MOST HONOURED AND HUMBLED. I will do my best to meet this challenge with the help and support of all my fellow Club members and their families; because families of Rotarians are part of the Club. SPOUSES ARE ALSO TEAM PLAYERS IN PROJECT EVENTS.

LET ME START BY CONGRATULATING OUTGOING PRESIDENT OODIT BOODHRAM FOR HIS YEAR OF SERVICE TO OUR CLUB AND FOR HIS ACHIEVEMENTS, WHICH HE HAS ALREADY ENUMERATED EARLIER.

SINCE MY ELECTION, IPP Oodit did many things to show his support for me as his successor, and I thank him, BUT I caution him that HE SHOULD CONTINUE HIS ACTIVE support to the club throughout THIS COMING year.

WHY DID I JOIN ROTARY? IT IS ITS MAIN MOTTO “SERVICE BEFORE SELF” THAT ATTRACTED ME TO BE A ROTARIAN. WHEN YOU GO DEEP AROUND THE ISLAND, THERE IS POVERTY……WOULD YOU BELIEVE THERE IS SO MUCH POVERTY in beautiful Mauritius……JOINING ROTARY MADE ME SEE WHAT WE NORMALLY WOULD NOT LOOK AT. FOR THAT, I THANK MY SPONSOR PP SUREN AND FRIEND PP REYCHARD TO MAKE ME A ROTARIAN.

In unveiling his 2017-18 presidential theme, Rotary: Making a Difference/ UN IMPACT REEL, our Rotary International President Ian H.S. Riseley made the case that protecting the environment and curbing climate change are essential to Rotary’s goal of sustainable service. As requested by our RI President and BY our District Governor Manoj Vaghjee, the Rotary Club of Curepipe will surely contribute to the laudable project of making a difference by planting at least one tree for each of its members between the start of the Rotary year on 1 July and Earth Day on 22 April 2018.

Dear Guests and fellow Members.

There are many needy people throughout our community. ROTARY HAS AND WILL always BE ready to make their lives better in any way that we can. As Rotarians, it will not be good enough to give only what we have left over or what we can spare, but we must truly give of ourselves with new vigour in support of the ideals of Rotary.

I am proud to say that Rotary International leads the world in volunteer service.  It consists of 1.2 million members in 34,000 clubs, in over 200 countries.  But, Rotary is not about numbers…it is about service. One of the greatest strengths of Rotary is our ability to leverage our skills, our connections and our resources. OUR CLUB MEMBERSHIP COMPRISES OF ARCHITECTS, ENGINEERS, BANKERS, LEGAL COUNSELS, MEDICAL PROFESSION, ACCOUNTANTS, GESTIONNAIRES, EDUCATEURS, FORMATEURS, ETC. We shall USE ALL THOSE SKILLS VOLUNTARILY FOR THE COMMUNITY. ROTARY SUSTAINABILTY MEANS EMPOWERING FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES TO TAKE CHARGE OF THEIR OWN FUTURE BY GIVING THEM THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO SUCCEED.

Being a Rotarian is about the people we help. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters in Rotary is how much better the world becomes because Rotary is in it, because we CONTINUE MAKING a difference!  That’s why it is not enough for any of us to just show up at our club meetings, to attend an event and to do the minimum needed just enough to be noticed and no more. On the contrary, I wish to urge you all to attend club meetings regularly and recommit some more time to our projects and fellowship activities. In the coming days, we shall present our Road Map for the year and I am more than convinced that every member will contribute to its implementation. We ALSO need to continuously improve our weekly program so as to insure that it represents time well spent at our meetings and that fun remains front and center.

AS YOU KNOW, WE DO AN ANNUAL FUND-RAISING AND WE HAVE MANY SPONSORS. JUST TO GIVE YOU A GIST OF HOW THE CLUB WILL SPEND THE FUNDS COLLECTED, OUR FORTHCOMING ACTIVITIES ARE:

  • EDUCATION: LITERACY FOR ALL AGE-GROUPS, INCLUDING NOT SO YOUNG ONES + SOME FORM OF SCHOLARSHIPS AT UNIVERSITY LEVEL. IT IS SAID THAT EDUCATION BREAKS THE CYCLE OF MODERN-DAY SLAVERY, SUCH AS INDEBTEDNESS,PROSTITUTION, DRUGS,ETC…..

YOU SEE WE HAVE TO REGAIN OUR PASSION FOR ROTARY REGArdless of our age in years. Aging is mandatory. Acting old is optional. RI representative at DC Reunion said. ‘les jeunes courent vite, mais les moins jeunes connaissent la route.’ SO WE SHALL WORK TOGETHER IN THE SAME DIRECTION WITH THE SAME GOAL.

Now to the serious part of Club affairs, Fun and Fellowship! Are you aware that The Rotary 4-way test has now a 5th component:  ‘Is it fun? Our club is widely known for its lively meetings which is a positive proof that we are fun-loving club. I shall endeavour to keep the fun and fellowship in our meetings, in our club projects, and our fellowship events. The Board this year will pay particular attention to organizing fun and fellowship events and a detailed list of our activities will soon be set out.

To conclude, I wish to state that I HAVE FAITH IN ROTARY AND IN ROTARIANS. THAT DURING THIS YEAR, WE WILL MAKE OUR COMMUNITY A BETTER PLACE AND we shall lit up the life of our Club and use that light to create a path so we can Make A Difference.

BEFORE I END, A QUOTE FROM MAHATMA GANDHI ‘THE FUTURE DEPENDS ON WHAT WE DO TODAY’.  SO LET EACH ONE OF US START MAKING A DIFFERENCE FROM NOW ON.

Ah, I was going to forget one huge mission for this year: I expect that our Sergeant-At-Arms Satish will fill our coffers with fines from the ‘bad-boys’ since we HAVE A FEW AMONGST US! WHEN OUR SERGEANT-AT-ARMS GIVES US AN OPPORTUNITY TO PAY A FINE IF FOR EXAMPLE OUR PICTURE HAS BEEN IN THE NEWSPAPERS. IT IS HILARIOUS.

Thank You ALL.

Our club has been built on a strong leadership foundation, and I am fortunate to have a membership that is fully committed to go the extra mile in building the club, and carrying out the many worthwhile projects that we undertake for the benefit of our community.

I NOW HAVE THE PLEASURE TO PRESENT YOU THOSE WHO WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE THIS YEAR:

I would also like to congratulate each of the new Board members and I look forward to serving with you. I have already seen the energy, enthusiasm, and commitment that you all bring to the Board.
